PSV rents Keeper Drommel to Sparta, AZ Strictly successor Ruben van Bommel

PSV has temporarily said goodbye to goalkeeper Joël Drommel on Tuesday. The keeper is leaving on loan to Sparta Rotterdam. However, his contract with the reigning national champion will be extended until mid-2027. AZ welcomed Ruben van Bommel’s replacement.

There was no place for Drommel in the goalkeeping guild at PSV next season. Earlier in the day, the club welcomed Matej Kovar, who is joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. He and Nick Olij will decide who will be the first goalkeeper.

Olij already joined from Sparta Rotterdam earlier this summer and Drommel is now going the other way. The 28-year-old Drommel joined from FC Twente four years ago and has so far played 66 official matches for PSV.

In recent seasons, Drommel was second choice behind Walter Benítez. He was allowed to play in the cup tournament. “Joël has always shown himself to be an exemplary professional and great team player at PSV,” says director of football affairs Earnest Stewart.

“At Sparta he will have the opportunity to continue building on his development and force many playing minutes in order to return stronger to PSV,” says Stewart. Drommel had a contract until mid-2026. With the contract extension, PSV prevents a free transfer in a year.

AZ brings in Van Bommel’s successor

AZ was also active on the transfer market on Tuesday. The Alkmaar club saw Van Bommel leave for PSV for around 15 million euros and has found his successor in Denmark at Viborg FF.

The 21-year-old Isak Jensen signs a contract until the summer of 2030 and must make Van Bommel forget in Alkmaar. The Dane already met some of his new teammates this summer at the European Championship under 21. There he won in the group stage with Denmark against the Netherlands (1-2).

Jensen is AZ’s second summer acquisition. Earlier, the club presented defender Mateo Chávez. He came over from the Mexican Chivas.
