Ncuti Gatwa has said goodbye to the popular British series Doctor Who because the lead role was physically and mentally demanding for him. The 32-year-old actor said this on the BBC program Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.
It was already announced at the end of May that Gatwa would not be returning to the popular series. “I’m getting older and my body was tired,” he said. “The series demands a lot from you, mentally, emotionally and physically. So it was time.”
The Scottish actor played the lead role for only two seasons. However, he does not rule out returning to the series someday: “Never say never.”
Doctor Who is about a time traveler who calls himself ‘Doctor’. The series has been running since 1963, with a break between 1989 and 2005.
The role of Doctor is played by a different actor every two or three seasons. Among others, David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi and Matt Smith previously played the role. It is not yet known who will succeed Gatwa in the next season.
