Writer Boris Akoenin was sentenced in absentia in Russia to a prison sentence of fourteen years. The internationally known author criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed his support for Ukraine.

According to the court, Akoenin was guilty of “justifying terrorism” because he would have called on social media as “revolution”. Pro-Ukrainian expressions would also amount to “supporting terrorist activities”. The writer’s lawyer said that his client is innocent and argued in vain that it was missing.

The author did not attend the ruling. He left Russia in 2014 and currently lives in London. The writer calls the criminal case in Russia a “farce” and says that in his eyes there are no more serious courts in the country.

The writer of Georgian descent has also published his books in the Netherlands. He is best known for his historical crime novels.
