Igor Paixão will miss the start of the Eredivisie season for Feyenoord. The Brazilian was injured during training on Thursday, after which he had to skip the friendly match against Belgian champion Union Saint-Gilloise (1-1). The attacker is struggling with a muscle injury.
“Igor Paixão has sustained a muscle injury and faces a recovery of several weeks,” Feyenoord reported on the site on Monday. The 25-year-old standout from last season did play one half in the friendly match against SC Cambuur (1-4), but was injured five days later.
The Eredivisie season begins for Feyenoord on August 9 with a home match against NAC Breda. A few days earlier (August 5 or 6), the Rotterdam team will play their first match in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Both matches appear to be too early for Paixão.
It is not yet known which team Feyenoord will face in the qualifying round of the European billions ball. The draw will take place on July 21.
The injury also seems like bad news for Paixão’s transfer wishes, who was previously linked with Olympique Marseille this summer. According to several media, the French club would not meet Feyenoord’s desired transfer fee.
Paixão, who will most likely enter his fourth Feyenoord season, is under contract in De Kuip until the summer of 2029. Last season, the left winger played 47 official matches for Feyenoord. In those, he scored eighteen goals and provided nineteen assists.
