Nog 87 km – Tadej Pogacar laat zijn ploeg de hele dag op kop rijden, maar hard gaat het nog niet. Door de versnellingen in de kopgroep is de achterstand op de voorste renners al opgelopen tot 3 minuten en 40 seconden. Tot dusver is de voorsprong van de kopgroep nog niet zo groot geweest vandaag.
Nog 89 km – Aan de voet van de vierde beklimming van de dag sluiten nog acht renners aan bij de kopgroep, wat betekent dat achttien renners aan het front rijden. De Côte de Berzet is 3,4 kilometer lang en stijgt gemiddeld 7,4 procent. Een heus klimmetje voor de puncheurs.
Thymen Arensman heeft de afgelopen maanden de nodige pech gehad, dus hij snakt naar succes in de Tour de France. Voorlopig heeft de klimmer uit het Gelderse Deil de zaken goed voor elkaar. Hij is er steeds als de kippen bij. Wat belooft dat?
Nog 94 km – Op de derde beklimming van de dag is de kopgroep in brokstukken uiteengevallen. Momenteel rijden tien renners vooraan: Ben Healy en Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost), Ben O’Connor (Team Jayco AlUla), Simon Yates en Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike), Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers), Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) en Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step).
Nog 96 km – Een mooi beeld, vooral voor de autosportliefhebbers. De renners rijden momenteel over het Circuit de Charade, dat in een ver verleden het decor was van een Formule 1-race. Welke renner duwt zijn fiets vandaag als eerste over de streep?
Nog 98,5 km – De Fransman Lenny Martinez komt ook op de derde beklimming van de dag als eerste boven en verstevigt zijn leiding in het bergklassement. Hij heeft nu 17 punten, 9 punten meer dan nummer twee Tim Wellens. Er zijn nog 22 bergpunten te verdienen vandaag. Het ziet er goed uit voor de Fransman in de strijd om de bolletjestrui.
Nog 99 km – Het avontuur van Ben O’Connor is niet voor lang geweest, want hij wordt ingerekend door een groep van zeven renners, onder wie Thymen Arensman. De Nederlander laat zich goed zien vandaag. Doet hij alleen niet te veel?
Nog 100 km – In het peloton blijft het ook op de derde beklimming van de dag rustig. Op dit moment rijden de renners op het langzaamste schema. Dat betekent dat de finish iets voor 18.00 uur is.
Nog 101 km – Aanval in de kopgroep! Ben O’Connor, de nummer twee van de Vuelta a España van vorig jaar, is het lage tempo in de kopgroep beu en plaatst een aanval op de flanken van de Côte de Charade. Niemand kan hem volgen. Is dit het begin van een lange solo?
Nog 102 km – Een beeld vanuit de helikopter leert dat het peloton flink is uitgedund, nu de renners al 1.500 hoogtemeters in de benen hebben vandaag. Een grove schatting leert dat er nog zo’n 50 renners in de grote groep rijden.
Nog 103 km – In vliegende vaart gaan de koplopers naar de derde beklimming van de dag, de Côte de Charade. Die is 5,1 kilometer lang en heeft een gemiddelde stijging van 6,8 procent. Ook op de top van deze beklimming van de tweede categorie zijn vijf punten te verdienen voor het bergklassement. Lenny Martinez zal zich vast weer gaan roeren. Ondertussen volgt het peloton op 1 minuut en 45 seconden van de 29-koppige kopgroep.
Nog 110,5 km – Lenny Martinez komt ook op de tweede beklimming van de dag als eerste boven en is virtueel de nieuwe leider in het bergklassement. Daar moest de Fransman zich nog wel voor inspannen, want de Noor Anders Halland Johannessen had ook zijn zinnen gezet op de punten. In de laatste meters rekende Martinez echter af met de Noor. Is dat voldoende om straks de bolletjestrui te mogen aantrekken?
Nog 111 km – Tadej Pogacar hoeft niet meer te rekenen op zijn Franse helper Pavel Sivakov. Hij moet ook op de tweede beklimming van de dag lossen. Over assistentie heeft hij echter geen klagen, met Jhonatan Narváez, Tim Wellens, Adam Yates en Marc Soler in zijn nabijheid. De Duitse hardrijder Nils Politt heeft zijn werk er al een tijdje op zitten en heeft zich laten lossen.
Nog 112 km – De teams in het peloton rijden in slagvolgorde op de flanken van de Côte de La Baraque. Het team van geletruidrager UAE Team Emirates rijdt vooraan, daarachter Visma-Lease a Bike en daarachter het Soudal Quick-Step van Remco Evenepoel. De ‘Grote Drie’ houdt zich nog rustig.
Nog 114 km – Het tempo in het peloton kakt een beetje in, waardoor Mathieu van der Poel steeds dichter bij de grote groep komt. Hij moest al lossen op de eerste beklimming van de dag, maar wordt nu op slechts een minuut van het peloton gemeld. Hij zal vandaag geen rol van betekenis spelen, na zijn heroïsche inspanning gisteren, maar vrezen voor een te late binnenkomst hoeft hij ook niet.
Nog 115 km – De koplopers zijn begonnen aan de tweede beklimming van de dag: de Côte de La Baraque. Die is 4,8 kilometer lang en behoorlijk steil. Gemiddeld stijgt de weg met 7,4 procent.
Het stof is neergedaald in deze rit, dus wordt het tijd voor de mooie plaatjes vanuit het Centraal Massief. Hier daalt Tadej Pogacar in vloeiende stijl af door het Franse land.
Nog 120,6 km – Er volgt in de kopgroep geen strijd om de eerste plaats bij de tussensprint. De Noor Anders Halland Johannessen kijkt wel even over zijn schouder naar de Fransman Bruno Armirail, waarna een klein onderonsje tussen de twee lijkt te ontstaan. Armirail geeft geen sjoege en gunt de punten en het prijzengeld aan Johannessen.
Nog 123 km – De koplopers denderen af op de enige tussensprint van de dag, in de Franse plaats Durtol. Daar zijn 20 punten voor de puntentrui te verdienen. Van de 29 koplopers is Quinn Simmons de hoogst geklasseerde renner in het puntenklassement, maar zijn achterstand op Jonathan Milan lijkt nu al onoverbrugbaar.
Nog 126 km – In het peloton rijdt de Duitse hardrijder Nils Politt al een tijdje op kop voor zijn kopman Tadej Pogacar. De geletruidrager heeft nog vijf andere helpers over: Jhonatan Narváez, Tim Wellens, Adam Yates, Marc Soler en Pavel Sivakov. Laatstgenoemde is teruggekeerd in het peloton, nadat hij op de eerste beklimming nog moest lossen. De achterstand op de kopgroep is 1 minuut en 50 seconden.
Nog 128 km – Het gaat in de ogen van de Australiërs Ben O’Connor (Team Jayco AlUla) en Harry Sweeny (EF Education-EasyPost) niet hard genoeg en dus rijden zij eventjes weg uit de kopgroep. Van een vloeiende samenwerking is voorin nog geen sprake.
Nog 134 km – Pablo Castrillo voegt zich met hulp van zijn Spaanse ploeggenoot Iván Romeo bij de kopgroep, die nu uit maar liefst 29 renners bestaat. Ze zijn verdeeld over de volgende ploegen: EF Education-EasyPost (4), Team Jayco AlUla (3), Israel-Premier Tech (3), Visma-Lease a Bike (2), Soudal Quick-Step (2), Tudor (2), Movistar (2), Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team (2), XDS Astana Team (2), Bahrain Victorious (1), INEOS Grenadiers (1), Lidl-Trek (1), Groupama-FDJ (1), Arkéa-B&B Hotels (1), Team TotalEnergies (1) en Uno-X Mobility (1).
Nog 135 km – Strafwerk voor Pablo Castrillo van Movistar. Hij moet van de ploegleiding ook in de kopgroep zitten en een verschil van 1 minuut overbruggen. Slaagt hij daarin? Of wordt het een chasse patate?
Nog 139 km – Een tegenvaller voor de Nederlandse volgers: Frank van den Broek kan het tempo in de kopgroep niet volgen en haakt af. De kopgroep bestaat nu uit 28 renners, van wie Thymen Arensman de enige Nederlander is.
Wel heeft het Nederlandse Visma-Lease a Bike van kopman Jonas Vingegaard twee renners vooruit: Simon Yates en Victor Campenaerts. Tadej Pogacar heeft geen helpers vooruit gestuurd en laat zijn UAE-knechten op kop van het peloton rijden.
Nog 143 km – En daar is de volgende uitvaller in deze Tour de France en dat is geen kleine naam: Søren Waerenskjold. De Noor, die eerder dit jaar Omloop Het Nieuwsblad won, kwam gisteren ten val en knijpt nu definitief in de remmen. Na Jasper Philipsen en Marijn van den Berg gaat er dus weer een kruis over de naam van een sprinter.
Nog 144 km – Visma Lease-a Bike heeft zijn zaakjes uitstekend op orde, want Simon Yates voegt zich samen met zeven andere renners bij de koplopers. De kopgroep bestaat nu uit 28 renners. Ook Julian Alaphilippe en Michael Storer rijden aan het front.
Het is bijna niet bij te houden, al die aanvallen in de openingsfase van deze rit in deze Tour de France. Op voorhand werd al het nodige spektakel verwacht en dat komt helemaal uit. Het is, opnieuw, een zeer snelle start van deze rit.

Nog 153 km – Lenny Martinez komt als eerste boven op de Côte de Loubeyrat en pakt vijf punten voor het bergklassement. Hij heeft nu zeven bergpunten, één punt minder dan Tim Wellens, de drager van de bolletjestrui. De Fransman Bruno Armirail wordt achter Martinez tweede.
Nog 154 km – Het is bal in het peloton. Nu een groep met maar liefst negentien renners de ruimte lijkt te krijgen, proberen de teams zonder koplopers nog de oversteek te maken. De verschillen zijn klein.
Nog 155 km – Een tegenvaller voor geletruidrager Tadej Pogacar: Pavel Sivakov, een belangrijke helper in het hooggebergte, moet nu al lossen uit het peloton. Dat zal de moraal van Visma-Lease a Bike wat opvijzelen.
Nog 156 km – Een grote kopgroep lijkt zich dan te gaan vormen, met daarbij Thymen Arensman en Frank van den Broek. De Nederlanders hadden al aangekondigd dat hij zich zou mengen in de vlucht van de dag. Ze hebben voorlopig een gaatje van 12 seconden.
Nog 156 km – De deur achter het peloton staat wagenwijd open. Groenetruidrager Jonathan Milan heeft de witte vlag al gehesen, net als Thibau Nys. Laatstgenoemde is normaal gesproken een springveer, maar hij heeft al verschillende keren gezegd dat hij niet lekker in zijn vel zit in deze Tour de France. Ook Mathieu van der Poel kraakt.
Nog 157 km – Julian Alaphilippe wordt op de eerste steile meters van de Côte de Loubeyrat ingerekend door het peloton. De weg loopt er wel op tot 16 procent. Wie waagt nu de sprong naar voren?
Nog 159 km – Een oude bekende aan het front: Julian Alaphilippe. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen rijdt soepeltjes weg uit het peloton en heeft al een marge van 15 seconden te pakken. Over een paar kilometer begint hij als eerste aan de eerste klim van de dag, de Côte de Loubeyrat (4,1 kilometer à 6,3 procent). Hij wil de Fransen vermaken op deze nationale feestdag.
Nog 162 km – Krists Neilands en Neilson Powless zijn eraan voor de moeite. Het is bijzonder onrustig in het peloton. Elke ploeg wil vandaag een renner vooruit hebben, zo lijkt het. Ploegen die daar niet in slagen, proberen het gat gelijk te dichten.
