An American judge has again ruled that President Donald Trump cannot end automatic birthright citizenship for the time being. Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled that the policy could be implemented.
Anyone born on American soil or who has at least one American parent automatically receives American citizenship. That is stated in the constitution.
Trump wants to end that. For example, he does not want the children of undocumented immigrants to become American citizens.
Social organizations and individuals then filed lawsuits, and as a result, the matter is now going back and forth between courts of different levels. Federal judges have temporarily stopped the decision in recent months. That pause then applied to the entire United States.
But two weeks ago, the Supreme Court limited the ability of lower courts to block Trump’s decisions. The court ruled that they do not have the power to stop national measures.
To bring another case against the abolition of automatic birthright citizenship, a judge has accepted the case as a class-action lawsuit. The Supreme Court’s earlier ruling did not yet apply to that, and as a result, the policy cannot be implemented as long as that case is still ongoing.
