The record transfer of Ruben van Bommel to PSV is virtually complete, according to De Telegraaf, VI and ED. The reigning national champion has reached an agreement with AZ about a transfer of the winger, who will undergo a medical examination in Eindhoven on Wednesday.
PSV reportedly pays 15 million euros for Van Bommel, who was under contract in Alkmaar until mid-2027. He himself had already agreed with the Eindhoven team and will sign a multi-year contract.
Due to the transfer issues, the attacker of Jong Oranje has not gone to training camp with AZ. That club traveled to Epe on Monday.
With a transfer fee of 15 million euros, Van Bommel will be PSV’s most expensive purchase ever. However, he shares that title with Hirving Lozano. The Mexican came over from Napoli two years ago for the same amount.
Van Bommel should become the successor to Noa Lang at PSV, who will soon complete his transfer to Napoli. The left winger follows in his father’s footsteps at the Philips Stadium. Mark van Bommel played for PSV from 1999 to 2005 and in the 2012/2013 season.
The twenty-year-old Van Bommel was already active in the PSV youth academy and made the switch to MVV in 2020. He made his debut in professional football for that club in 2022, after which he signed with AZ on a free transfer in 2023. In the past two seasons, Van Bommel scored nine times in 53 Eredivisie matches.
Van Bommel is in the top ten of most expensive outgoing transfers from AZ ever, but it is far from a record for the Alkmaar team. In 2018, AZ sold Alireza Jahanbakhsh to Brighton & Hove Albion for 22.5 million euros.
PSV may also get another player from AZ after Van Bommel, because Sven Mijnans is also linked to trainer Peter Bosz’s club. The 25-year-old midfielder is still under contract in the AFAS Stadium until mid-2028. Earlier this summer, PSV already took over goalkeeper Nick Olij from Sparta Rotterdam.
