Germany did excellent business on Tuesday at the European Women’s Football Championship in Switzerland. Coach Christian Wück’s team won a thrilling match against Denmark 2-1 and can hardly miss a place in the quarter-finals.
A lot happened in the match at St. Jakob-Park in Basel. Klara Bühl thought she had put Germany ahead after eighteen minutes, but the VAR had its doubts. Play was stopped for minutes, after which it became clear that teammate Sjoeke Nüsken had slightly touched the ball in an offside position.
A little later, the goal fell on the other side. Amalie Vangsgaard got the ball with some luck at her feet and shot it into the near corner from the turn: 0-1.
Germany recovered and put pressure on Denmark. Just before half-time, that resulted in a penalty due to handball, but again the VAR threw a spanner in the works after minutes of deliberation. The handball turned out to be just outside the sixteen-meter area.
Germany reverses duel after halftime
Shortly after the break, the ball did go on the spot, because Linda Dallmann was floored in the penalty area. Sjoeke Nüsken took the penalty and shot Germany alongside: 1-1.
Ten minutes later Germany took the lead. Lea Schüller got the ball on a silver platter from Jule Brand and shot nicely: 2-1. After that there were chances back and forth, but no more goals were scored.
Germany now has six points from two group matches and is almost in the quarter-finals. After the second defeat in a row, Denmark has a tough task to reach the knock-out phase. Poland and Sweden will face each other in this group at 9:00 PM.
