Nog 149 km – Mathieu van der Poel is vandaag niet van plan om de kopgroep een grote voorsprong te gunnen. De vier vluchters mogen voorlopig niet meer dan twee minuten voor het peloton rijden. De ploeg van Van der Poel rijdt sinds de start in Amiens op kop om de voorsprong binnen de perken te houden.
De Tour de France levert altijd prachtige plaatjes op. Zo ook vandaag. De kopgroep door de prachtige Franse velden met zonnebloemen. Een schilderij.
Nog 155 km – Na een achtervolging van 10 kilometer is het Kasper Asgreen gelukt. Hij sluit aan bij de kopgroep. We hebben nu vier renners vooraan: de Fransmannen Lenny Martinez (Bahrain-Victorious) en Thomas Gachignard (Team TotalEnergies) de Noor Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) en dus de Deen Asgreen (EF Education-EasyPost). Zij hebben een voorsprong van 2 minuten en 5 seconden. Het peloton onder leiding van de ploeg Mathieu van der Poel geeft de kopgroep voorlopig niet veel ruimte.
Nog 158 km – Wout van Aert laat zich in de openingsfase in een dienende rol zien bij Visma-Lease a Bike. Hij haalt bidons voor de ploeg. Het woord luxeknecht is dan wel op zijn plaats.
Nog 164 km – Geletruidrager Mathieu van der Poel zet zijn mannen op kop van het peloton, maar dat is meer om hem uit de wind te houden. Echt hard rijden de mannen van Alpecin-Deceuninck niet. De drie koplopers hebben al een voorsprong van 1 minuut en 50 seconden. Achtervolger Kasper Asgreen hangt daar ergens tussen.
Nog 166 km – Kasper Asgreen krijgt strafwerk van zijn ploeg EF Education-EasyPost. De drie koplopers rijden al anderhalve minuut vooruit en opeens demarreert de Deen uit het peloton. Als iemand het gat kan dichtrijden, is het Asgreen wel. Maar dit lijkt meer een paniekreactie dan een blijk van doordacht ploegentactiek.
Nog 169 km – Koplopers Lenny Martinez en Jonas Abrahamsen krijgen bezoek van de Fransman Thomas Gachignard (Team TotalEnergies), die als enige renner nog uit het peloton is gesprongen. Deze drie lijken de zegen te krijgen van het peloton en in elk geval een groot deel van de dag vooraan te rijden.
Nog 172 km – Twee renners beproeven hun geluk: de Fransman Lenny Martinez (Bahrain-Victorious) en de Noor Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility). Vooral de naam van Martinez is opvallend, want hij kan buitengewoon goed klimmen. Het peloton lijkt het niettemin prima te vinden. Ze pakken al snel een halve minuut.
Départ réel! Koersdirecteur Christian Prudhomme heeft met de vlag gezwaaid vanuit de jurywagen! De vierde etappe naar Rouen is onderweg. Welke renners gaan als eersten in de aanval?

Départ fictif! The unofficial start in the French town of Amiens has sounded. The riders still have to cycle 10 kilometers before the Tour stage to Rouen really starts. Among others, yellow jersey wearer Mathieu van der Poel and green jersey wearer Jonathan Milan traditionally ride in the front of the peloton.
Jasper Philipsen underwent immediate surgery in the Belgian town of Herentals yesterday after his heavy crash, he announced this morning via Instagram. He has suffered a broken collarbone, among other things. “It is difficult to find words for this great disappointment,” he writes. “This is not how I imagined my Tour. But sometimes life hits hard at a moment when it seemed too good to be true.”
Of course, there is still a lot of talk in the peloton about yesterday’s stage. It was a hectic final with a lot of heavy crashes, with the crash of green jersey wearer Jasper Philipsen catching the eye.
The Belgian is so far the only rider who has given up as a result of yesterday’s crashes. The Frenchman Emilien Jeannière, who crashed hard into the boarding in the mass sprint yesterday, is simply getting back on, his team Team TotalEnergies has just reported. The last climb of this 174-kilometer stage towards the finish in Rouen is only 800 meters long, but has an average gradient of 10.6 percent. That is as long as the iconic Cauberg in Valkenburg in South Limburg, but the Rampe Saint-Hilaire is much steeper. Ideal for explosive riders like Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogacar.
