Germany and Sweden are close to the quarter-finals of the European Women’s Football Championship in Switzerland. If they live up to their role as favorites and win on Tuesday evening, the next round is already a fact for both countries.
6:00 PM: Germany-Denmark (Basel)
Germany started the European Championship well with a 2-0 victory over the tough Poland. However, the eight-time European champion lost captain Giulia Gwinn in that match. The defender will no longer be in action at this tournament due to a knee injury.
In advance, Germany is the favorite against Denmark. The record champion has won the last five matches convincingly (goal difference: 22-1). The Danes are less productive and have only scored twice in the last four matches. A Danish goal also failed to materialize in the first group match against Sweden (0-1).
Player to watch: Bayern Munich attacker Pernille Harder (32) was close to a goal against Sweden, but the Dane hit the crossbar. A prize is never far away for the two-time European Footballer of the Year. She has always won the national title in the past ten seasons (in Germany, England and Sweden).
9:00 PM: Poland-Sweden (Lucerne)
Sweden has invariably reached the knockout phase in every European Championship participation and that is also expected this year. Poland must take action to prevent elimination. The European Championship debutant is the only one from the group outside the top twelve of the FIFA ranking (27th place).
The Netherlands will keep a close eye on developments in Group C. If Andries Jonker’s team finishes in the top two in Group D, Orange will face a match with the number one or two from the group of Germany and Sweden in the quarter-finals.
Player to watch: Captain Ewa Pajor (28) must help Poland with goals. The top striker impressed last season at FC Barcelona. She scored 42 goals in her debut year and won the national title and the national cup with the Spanish club.
