Two crew members injured and two missing after attack on ship in the Red Sea

Two crew members of a Greek cargo ship were injured in a drone attack off the coast of Yemen on Monday. Two others are missing. The attack followed hours after Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack on another cargo ship.

On Sunday, the cargo ship Magic Seas was attacked off the coast of Yemen. The ship was sailing under the Liberian flag and is owned by a Greek company. Nineteen crew members and three armed guards were forced to abandon the ship.

On Monday, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack. The rebel group also claimed that Magic Seas had sunk, but the ship’s manager could not confirm this.

A few hours later, another cargo ship, also sailing under the Liberian flag and operated by a Greek company, was attacked with drones and small boats. Two crew members were seriously injured. Two other members are still missing.

The bridge of the ship was hit, one of the commercial managers of the ship told news agency Reuters. As a result, communication with the ship has been disrupted and it is difficult to make contact with the crew. The attack has not yet been claimed.

The Houthis often attack ships on the Red Sea. According to the rebel group, the attacks are a response to Israel’s violence in the war in Gaza. For this reason, the Houthis also regularly attack Israel with rockets. Israel regularly carries out counterattacks. That also happened on Sunday. Israel attacked three ports in Yemen, after also attacking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
