Trump imposes 25 percent levies for products from Japan and South Korea

The United States has imposed a 25 percent import tariff on goods from Japan and South Korea. US President Donald Trump announced this on Monday.

The import tariffs will take effect on August 1. Trump previously said that ten to twelve countries would receive a letter about the import tariffs on Monday.

These are reciprocal tariffs, levies for countries that themselves have levies on American goods. The percentages are virtually the same as the tariffs that Trump had previously announced: 24 percent for Japan and 25 percent for South Korea.

Trump previously decided to postpone those tariffs by ninety days until July 9. This gave countries more time to negotiate. In the meantime, tariffs of 10 percent applied.

Should the countries decide to increase their own tariffs on the import of American goods, this increase will be added to the 25 percent that Trump charges, the American president writes in his letters.

Trump previously announced on his platform Truth Social that he would announce the import tariffs for various countries by letter from 12:00 PM local time (6:00 PM Dutch time).

It is not yet known what the tariffs are for products from the European Union.
