China opened its first LEGOLAND on Saturday, the largest theme park in the Lego chain in the world. Many thousands of visitors flocked to the new park in Shanghai, which is intended to boost tourism in China.
Enthusiastic Lego lovers stormed into the park at the opening, dressed in theme shirts and waving flags. They braved the heat to explore the huge grounds. Every visitor received free LEGO gloves.
Visitors were welcomed by a gigantic Lego figure over 26 meters high. 85 million Lego bricks were used for the structures in the amusement park. There are more than 75 attractions.
“I myself like to play with LEGO and we have countless sets at home. So I wanted to go to LEGOLAND as soon as possible,” said Shi, a 35-year-old resident of the nearby city of Hangzhou. He visited the park with his wife and child.
Beijing has announced subsidies to make domestic travel more affordable for Chinese people and wants local authorities to actively promote their tourist attractions via social media.
