A 20-year-old man attacked passengers with a hammer on Thursday afternoon on a train bound for Vienna. Five people were injured, including the suspect. The man has been arrested.
The incident occurred as the train was traveling between the Bavarian cities of Straubing and Plattling. Passengers overpowered the attacker, after which he could be arrested, reports the German medium RTL.
The suspect is “possibly slightly more seriously injured” than other injured people, according to a police spokesperson quoted by the German newspaper Die Zeit. The man is being held in a police cell and is receiving medical treatment.
The suspect and three of the injured have Syrian nationality. The Syrian victims are 15, 24 and 51 years old. The nationality of the fourth victim, a 38-year-old passenger, is still unknown. The motive of the suspect is still under investigation.
There were approximately five hundred passengers on board the ICE train when the attack took place. The train was en route from Hamburg to Vienna. Passengers pulled the emergency brake, bringing the train to a standstill near Strasskirchen.
