Wimbledon continues after Thursday without Dutch participation. Suzan Lamens lost without a chance in the second round against the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, eliminating all Dutch players from the singles in London: 6-4 and 6-0.
The fourth day of Wimbledon thus turned into a day of reckoning for the Dutch. Earlier in the day, Botic van de Zandschulp and Jesper de Jong were eliminated in the second round. Tallon Griekspoor and Arantxa Rus were already eliminated after the first round.
It didn’t seem in the first set that Lamens would be wiped out by Alexandrova, the number seventeen in the world ranking. The South Hollander even took a break lead, but a game later it was already tied again. After that, Alexandrova prevailed.
That blow reverberated for a long time with the 25-year-old Lamens, because in the second set she was completely without a chance. She didn’t win a single game. The match lasted only 55 minutes. The second set was over after just 21 minutes.
Yet Lamens can look back on a successful tournament. The Dutch player made her debut at Wimbledon and is 99,000 pounds (approximately 115,000 euros) richer. She may also rise a few places in the world ranking. She started the tournament as the world number 69.
Wimbledon still has Dutch participation in the doubles. Robin Haase, Jean-Julien Rojer, Sander Arends, Demi Schuurs, Isabelle Haverlag and Rus are still active in it. Rojer won the doubles at Wimbledon in 2015.
