The weather brought many special things on Tuesday. For example, it was a rare ‘very hot day’, there was a regional heatwave and the highest temperature ever on July 1st was measured at all weather stations. Records could also be broken on Wednesday.
It will not have escaped anyone’s notice that it has been very warm in the Netherlands in recent days. This heat has ensured that a number of weather records have been broken.
In De Bilt it was 35.5 degrees. Because the location of De Bilt is considered representative of the Dutch weather, it is officially the warmest July 1st ever. The previous record was from 2015. It was then 33.2 degrees.
Due to the record in De Bilt, it also officially became a ‘very hot day’ – a fairly rare occurrence. All official weather stations in the Netherlands reached the tropical limit of 30 degrees today. This means that the warmest July 1st ever has been recorded at every station.
The hottest temperature on Tuesday was in the south of the country. In Eindhoven the thermometer reached 37.6 degrees. This broke the old record of 36.5 degrees.
It will also remain very warm on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. “It will be a real sticky night,” meteorologist Berend van Straaten from Weerplaza tells NU.nl. In many places it will remain warmer than 20 degrees and in urban areas it may not get much colder than 25 degrees.
“This will make it an exceptionally warm night, but not yet an official tropical night,” says Van Straaten. Then the temperature must not drop below 20 degrees for 24 hours. “There is a good chance that this will happen.”
Possible official heatwave on Wednesday
The weather station in Eindhoven has also identified a heatwave. This means that there was a regional heatwave on Tuesday. Weeronline expects more regional heatwaves to follow on Wednesday.
An official heatwave may also be recorded on Wednesday. This is possible if it is warmer than 30 degrees in De Bilt. For a heatwave you need at least five summer days (25 degrees or higher), including at least three tropical days (30 degrees or higher).
More records could be broken on Wednesday. Such as the warmest July 2nd ever, at regional or national level. And there is also the rare chance that it will be warmer than 39 degrees somewhere. This only happened before in 2019 and 2022.
