In contrast to Alcaraz, Sinner does convince with his Wimbledon start

Jannik Sinner has convincingly reached the second round of Wimbledon on Tuesday. The world number one won against his compatriot Luca Nardi without losing a set: 6-4, 6-3, and 6-0.

Nardi was able to keep up with the 23-year-old Sinner for a long time in the first set, but after a break in the last game, the match on court 1 was actually already decided. The Italian Sinner was clearly a size too big for his compatriot.

Sinner only needed 1 hour and 49 minutes to defeat Nardi, the number 95 in the world rankings. This meant he was on the court almost three hours less than his rival Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard worked overtime on Monday to get Fabio Fognini on his knees.

In the second round, Sinner will face the Australian Aleksandar Vukic, who is 93rd in the world rankings. Alcaraz will play against the British amateur Oliver Tarvet on Wednesday. Sinner and Alcaraz can only meet in the final.

Sinner has never won Wimbledon. The Italian’s best performance at the Grand Slam tournament in London is a semi-final place in 2023. Last year, he lost in the quarter-finals to Daniil Medvedev. Sinner did win the Australian Open (2024 and 2025) and the US Open (2024).

For Sinner’s compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, Wimbledon is already over. The number seven in the world could not cope with the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili: 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 and 6-1. Last year, Musetti reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
