Wielerploeg XDS-Astana begint zaterdag met twee Nederlanders aan de Tour de France. Cees Bol en Mike Teunissen behoren tot de achtkoppige selectie van de ploeg uit Kazachstan.
Teunissen is er voor de zesde keer bij. In 2019 won hij in dienst van Jumbo-Visma de openingsrit in Brussel, waarna hij twee dagen in de gele trui mocht rijden.
Bol doet ook voor de zesde keer mee. Vorig jaar was hij de lead-out van Mark Cavendish, die zijn 35e etappezege in de Tour boekte en daarmee alleen recordhouder werd.
Wout Poels staat ook onder contract bij Astana, maar gaat niet mee naar de Tour. De 37-jarige Limburger reed dit jaar wel de Giro d’Italia, de enige grote ronde waarin hij nog geen etappe heeft gewonnen.
Naast Bol en Teunissen zijn ook Davide Ballerini, Clément Champoussin, Yevgeniy Fedorov, Sergio Higuita, Harold Tejada en Simone Velasco geselecteerd door Astana. Ballerini lijkt samen met de Nederlanders voor succes in de sprintetappes te moeten zorgen. Champoussin, Higuita en Tajada richten hun pijlen waarschijnlijk op de bergetappes.
Grand Départ in Lille
Zaterdag is in Lille de Grand Départ van de Tour de France. Na een overwegend vlakke eerste week gaat het peloton in week twee de Pyreneeën in. Daar wacht onder meer een aankomst op Hautacam, een klimtijdrit naar Peyragudes en een doorkomst op de Tourmalet.
In week drie trekt het peloton naar de Alpen, waar onder meer de Mont Ventoux, de Col de la Loze en La Plagne op het menu staan. In de slotetappe naar Parijs zijn er drie passages in Montmartre, dat ook het decor was van de olympische wegrit in 2024.
Cycling team XDS-Astana starts the Tour de France on Saturday with two Dutch riders. Cees Bol and Mike Teunissen are part of the eight-man selection of the team from Kazakhstan.
Teunissen is participating for the sixth time. In 2019, while riding for Jumbo-Visma, he won the opening stage in Brussels, after which he was allowed to wear the yellow jersey for two days.
Bol is also participating for the sixth time. Last year, he was the lead-out for Mark Cavendish, who booked his 35th stage victory in the Tour, making him the sole record holder.
Wout Poels is also under contract with Astana, but will not be going to the Tour. The 37-year-old from Limburg did ride the Giro d’Italia this year, the only major tour in which he has not yet won a stage.
In addition to Bol and Teunissen, Davide Ballerini, Clément Champoussin, Yevgeniy Fedorov, Sergio Higuita, Harold Tejada, and Simone Velasco have also been selected by Astana. Ballerini, together with the Dutch riders, seems to have to ensure success in the sprint stages. Champoussin, Higuita, and Tajada are likely to focus on the mountain stages.
Grand Départ in Lille
The Grand Départ of the Tour de France will be in Lille on Saturday. After a predominantly flat first week, the peloton will enter the Pyrenees in week two. There, an arrival on Hautacam, a mountain time trial to Peyragudes, and a passage on the Tourmalet await.
In week three, the peloton moves to the Alps, where the Mont Ventoux, the Col de la Loze, and La Plagne are on the menu, among other things. In the final stage to Paris, there are three passages in Montmartre, which was also the setting for the Olympic road race in 2024.
