Six years after her first Dutch title on the road it was hit again on Saturday for Lorena Wiebes. The 26-year-old cyclist was supreme in the sprint, after good work by her teammates. Those four riders get a nice reward.
If someone was happy with the relocation of the NK cycling from Nijmegen to Ede, it was Wiebes. The top sprint star only has good memories of the Gelderland place.
“I became Dutch champion here in 2019,” says Wiebes. “That was my first really big win and with that the start of my career. Only that is why Ede is especially for me.”
The rider of SD Worx-Protime also won a stage in 2022 from the Dutch journey race Simac Ladies Tour in Ede. On Saturday she completed her hat trick on the Arnhemseweg by conquering the Dutch title for the second time. Wiebes remained far in the mass sprint Charlotte Kool and Nienke Veenhoven.
Wiebes gives reward to teammates
For example, Wiebes finally has the red-white-blue sweater back. For the past two years she has been the lightning rod in the strong SD Worx team, while her team mates Demi Volling (2023) and Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (2024) cycled to the victory. On Saturday, Wiebes was the only leader in the strongest Dutch women’s team.
“From the moment I knew that the Dutch Championship would be in Ede, I had made it clear to the team and the girls that I really wanted to win today,” says the Utrechtse after the race. “We were able to make a good appointment. And the girls also get a nice reward for that.”
Wiebes does not want to say which gift she will give to Mischa Bredewold, Femke Gerritse, Femke Markus and Lisa van Belle. “The girls know what they get. They didn’t do the hard work for nothing.”
For the entire team there is already a party on Saturday afternoon, says Wiebes with a big smile. “We’ll be barbecuing anyway. Because the barbecue that I won with the Amstel Gold Race was delivered this morning at the truck of the team. So that’s the first reward.”
For that barbecue, Wiebes stays a little longer in one of her favorite Dutch municipalities. “We’re going to do it here in Ede,” says the Dutch champion laughing. “Just somewhere along the course.”
Wiebes cannot wear the red-white-blue champion sweater for the time being. The sprint star is also the European champion and that sweater is preceded.
The European Cycling European Championships in France in October on a difficult course. The chance is considerable that Wiebes loses her title there, after which she will race into the Dutch tricolor. “I have to say that I also really like the Dutch sweater,” she says.
