US imports fewer goods in April due to trade rates

The United States imported significantly fewer goods in April. This is mainly due to the import duties that US President Donald Trump announced in early April.

US imports decreased by 20 percent in April compared to March, according to the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) in its World Trade Monitor.

Compared to the same month a year earlier, there was a slight increase of 2.4 percent. In the first quarter of the year, US imports still increased by 18.4 percent.

According to the CPB, this increase was probably caused by American companies importing extra goods in anticipation of the impending tariff increases.
