The wedding of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is being moved to a less accessible part of Venice after a wave of protests in the Italian city. Demonstrators, who would rather have not seen Bezos come at all, consider it a victory.
Originally, billionaire Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sánchez were to marry in a medieval church in the center of the city. According to sources that news agency Reuters spoke to, the party has been moved to the Arsenale, a location in the Castello district.
That area is not accessible by land if the bridges are raised. They hope to keep protesters at a distance and guarantee the safety of the guests.
Many residents of Venice are not happy with the arrival of the huge party. They fear that the city is becoming a private amusement park for the super-rich. Bezos is the fourth richest person in the world. Protesters are taking action under the name ‘No Space for Bezos’.
“The news that Bezos has run away from the Misericordia is a great victory for us,” one of the activists told Reuters. Scuola Grande della Misericordia is the name of the church where the party was initially to be held.
It is not known on which day the wedding will take place exactly. Presumably it will be between Thursday and Saturday. A total of 200 to 250 guests are expected at the party. Among them are many famous names, including Kim Kardashian, Mick Jagger and Leonardo DiCaprio. The daughter of US President Donald Trump, Ivanka, is also expected.
