U2 guitarist The Edge officially Irish Staatsburger after 62 years

The Edge can finally call himself an Irish citizen. The 63-year-old guitarist of the Irish band U2 was born in the United Kingdom but moved to Ireland at the age of one. On Monday, he received Irish citizenship during a ceremony.

The famous guitarist spoke of “a monumental moment” afterwards. “I have lived in Ireland since I was one year old. But now is the right time, and I couldn’t be prouder of my country and everything it does. It couldn’t have come at a better time for me.”

The reason it took so long is due to The Edge himself. “Frankly, there were many times in the past when I could have done it by just filling out a form. But I’m glad it’s happening now. It feels more meaningful,” he said.

David Howell Evans, as the musician is really called, has been part of U2 since 1976, along with Bono, Larry Mullen Jr., and Adam Clayton. The band is known for songs like Sunday Bloody Sunday, With or Without You, and Beautiful Day.
