You should pay attention to this if you want to go from A to B around the NATO summit

If you’re hitting the road around The Hague, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam in the coming days, the NATO summit might just disrupt your travel plans. Many roads are (partially) closed. You’ll have better luck with the train.

The NATO summit takes place in The Hague on Tuesday and Wednesday, but road disruptions will start much earlier. Road users between Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam should expect potential traffic disruptions starting Sunday afternoon.

Roads will be closed on Sunday due to initial preparations. Afterward, the roads will be used to transport world leaders from Schiphol Airport to The Hague.

All in all, this means that road users can experience (very) serious disruptions on the A5, A4, A44, and N44 from Sunday at 5:00 PM until Thursday. You can read the precise details in the box at the bottom of this article.

‘Avoid the Randstad, work from home, or take the train’

Residents of The Hague face many road closures within the city. This is a problem not only for cars (as you can see on the map below) but also for cyclists and users of local public transport. If you want to know exactly which roads and paths are closed, you can check this page.

There are also disruptions on regional and local roads around and in Wassenaar, Katwijk, Noordwijk, Haarlemmermeer, Leiden, and Rotterdam. Rijkswaterstaat advises road users in those towns and cities to check the municipality’s website.

Due to the disruptions, road users are urged to avoid the Randstad as much as possible between June 23 and 26 and to work from home if possible. Those who do need to travel are advised to use bicycles or public transport as much as possible.

A spokesperson for NS (Dutch Railways) tells NU.nl that the trains are running according to the normal schedule. “We expect there will be enough space on the train,” he says. “Travelers may see extra security personnel at the stations.”
