Alcaraz passes Test on Queen's, Gauff loses first match after Roland Garros

Carlos Alcaraz had to dig deep on Thursday for his second victory at the Queen’s grass tournament. The Spaniard won in three sets against his compatriot Jaume Munar: 6-4, 6-7 (7) and 7-5. Coco Gauff lost her first match after her Roland Garros title.

Alcaraz was seriously tested on the grass in London by his compatriot. The Roland Garros winner had two match points in the second set, but Munar successfully fought them off.

In the third set, Munar took a 4-2 lead, after which Alcaraz showed his class. The world number two remained extremely cool and still took the win after 3 hours and 26 minutes.

For Alcaraz, it was his second victory at Queen’s after his victory over Jannik Sinner in the spectacular Roland Garros final. After that, he went to Ibiza to recharge.

Alcaraz already won against the Australian Adam Walton on Tuesday in the first match after his Ibiza trip: 6-4 and 7-6 (4). In the quarterfinals, a meeting with the American Reilly Opelka or the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech awaits. They are currently playing against each other.

Gauff experienced a difficult transition from gravel to grass. The world number two had to acknowledge her superior in the Chinese Wang Xinyu at the tournament in Berlin: 3-6 and 3-6.

Gauff won Roland Garros twelve days ago. In the final on the gravel in Paris, the American defeated Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one.

On the grass of Berlin, Gauff had no answer to the game of Wang, the number 49 in the world. The Chinese finished the two-time Grand Slam winner in 75 minutes.

Sabalenka dealt better with the transition from gravel to grass. In Berlin, she defeated Swiss Rebeka Masarova with 6-2 and 7-6 (6). With that victory, she qualified for the quarterfinals.
