The two people who died on Thursday after an accident in Rotterdam’s Waalhaven were unloading steel plates. This was reported by the port company C. Steinweg Group, where the victims worked.
Two other employees were seriously injured and taken to the hospital. All victims worked in the hold of a ship.
Steinweg says it is “deeply touched” and speaks of “great dismay”. “We are doing everything we can to assist the affected families and employees and provide support where needed.”
The Labor Inspectorate is investigating the incident. Earlier, the security region reported that the accident took place on board a ship. The Dutch Safety Board (OVV) will also investigate the accident. According to the OVV, it concerns an inland vessel.
The industrial accident happened on the closed business park at Pier 6 and 7 in the port, the security region reported earlier. The fire brigade used a port crane to get to the ship and get the seriously injured victims out of the hold.
The report about the accident came in around 7:45 a.m. A trauma helicopter, ambulances, fire brigade and police were on site.
