Barça takes over keeper García for 25 million euros from fellow Espanyol

FC Barcelona has secured Joan García as their first summer signing. The goalkeeper arrives from city rivals Espanyol for 25 million euros and has signed a six-year contract.

García rose to become one of the most sought-after keepers last season. The 24-year-old Spaniard made 146 saves, making him the most successful keeper of the La Liga season.

García went through Espanyol’s youth academy and made his debut for the first team in October 2022. Since last season, García has been the first-choice goalkeeper. In total, he played 67 matches for the club from Barcelona, where he still had a contract until mid-2028.

FC Barcelona has secured García as their first summer signing. The acquisition of the goalkeeper may have consequences for the future of Marc-André ter Stegen. The German keeper missed a large part of last season due to a serious knee injury.

The Catalan club surprised by bringing back the retired Wojciech Szczesny from his retirement to replace the injured Ter Stegen. When Ter Stegen was fit again, he could no longer count on a starting place.
