Inter remains without Dumfries and the free -standing against Monterrey

Internazionale drew 1-1 against Mexican side Monterrey in the Club World Cup on Tuesday. It was the Italian club’s first match since their Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Stefan de Vrij remained on the bench for the entire match in Pasadena, while Denzel Dumfries was left out of the squad by coach Cristian Chivu. According to Italian media, the Dutch international was injured in training earlier this week.

Without the two Dutch players, Inter fell behind in the 25th minute due to a goal by Sergio Ramos. The former Real Madrid icon headed the ball from a corner beyond the reach of goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

On the stroke of half-time, Lautaro Martínez equalized for Inter. He was able to tap in after a cleverly executed free kick.

Monterrey came close to regaining the lead in the 64th minute, but Sergio Canales’ shot hit the post. Moments later, Martínez had the winning goal at his feet, but he shot wildly over from close range.

It was Inter’s first match in the Club World Cup and thus also their first match since the Champions League final. The Milan club lost 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain just over two weeks ago. It was also Chivu’s first match as coach. He took over from Simone Inzaghi, who moved to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.
