Young Orange at victory not immediately for sure of quarterfinals ek: these are the scenarios

Jong Oranje can qualify for the quarterfinals of the European Championship on Wednesday evening. The Dutch promises must win, but with a victory in the last group match they are not immediately assured of a place in the last eight. These are the scenarios.

Scenario 1 | Jong Oranje beats Ukraine, Finland loses points

Jong Oranje took only one point in the first two group matches and is third in group D. The team of coach Michael Reiziger drew at the last minute against Finland (2-2) on Thursday and lost to Denmark on Sunday (2-1).

If Jong Oranje wins the last group match against Ukraine on Wednesday (kick-off at 6:00 PM) and Finland drops points against Denmark, it will automatically advance to the quarter-finals. Jong Oranje will then have four points and finish second.

The top two teams in each group advance to the knock-out phase. Denmark is already assured of a place in the quarter-finals after two victories.

Scenario 2 | Jong Oranje loses to Ukraine or draws

If Jong Oranje draws or loses in the last group match against Ukraine, it is eliminated. The Netherlands will then have two points and can no longer finish second.

Jong Oranje will then finish behind Denmark and Ukraine anyway. The Ukrainians, with a victory over the Netherlands, will advance to the quarter-finals together with Denmark. In the event of a draw, Ukraine is dependent on the result of Finland-Denmark.

Scenario 3 | Jong Oranje wins from Ukraine, Finland beats Denmark

If Jong Oranje wins from Ukraine and Finland is too strong for Denmark, the Netherlands and Finland both end up on four points. In that case, the goal difference will be decisive.

After two rounds of play, the goal difference is in favor of Jong Oranje. Reiziger’s team is on -1 and Finland on -2. The Netherlands is therefore well advised to score a lot in the last group match.

If Jong Oranje and Finland also end up equal on the basis of goal difference, the number of cards will be decisive. The team with the fewest cards advances. Here too, the Netherlands is currently at an advantage: Jong Oranje has so far received two yellow cards and Finland four.
