The Dutch cricket team has made history during the T20 Tri-Series in Glasgow, Scotland. The match against Nepal had to be decided with no less than three Super Overs for the first time in T20 history.
T20 cricket consists of a maximum of twenty overs, or six bowls. This means that both teams are allowed to bowl 120 balls. If the score is tied after the twentieth over, a Super Over follows to bring the decision.
That was also the case with Netherlands-Nepal on Monday. The Netherlands was sixteen runs ahead in the last over and seemed on its way to an easy victory. But Nepal still managed to tie the score.
It eventually became a historic day in cricket history. The first and second Super Over also both resulted in a tie: 19-19 and 17-17.
Netherlands wins in historic third Super Over
So a unique third Super Over had to be used. In it, the decision still fell, in favor of the Netherlands. Bowler Zach Lion-Cachet gave away no more runs, batsman Michael Levitt (photo) provided the crucial points.
Earlier this week, the Netherlands lost to host country Scotland. On Wednesday and Thursday, matches against Scotland and Nepal are again on the program.
The more good results the Netherlands achieves, the greater the chance that it will be allowed to participate in the qualification for the World Cup of 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. In 2023, the Netherlands finished tenth and last during the World Cup in India.
World Cups are also organized in the T20 category. The Netherlands was there in 2024 in the United States and the West Indies, but stranded in the group stage.
