Mehdi Taremi seems set to miss the Club World Cup for a peculiar reason. The Internazionale striker is unable to leave his native Iran due to the conflict with Israel, according to news agency Reuters and various Italian media.
The 32-year-old Taremi is visiting his family in Iran after playing two World Cup qualifying matches for the country. Iranian airspace was closed on Friday as a result of Israeli airstrikes.
As a result, Taremi cannot leave his native country. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia, the striker is no longer part of Internazionale’s squad for the Club World Cup, but the club has not yet confirmed this.
Inter starts the World Cup in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday (Dutch time) with a match in Los Angeles against the Mexican CF Monterrey. After that, the team of Orange internationals Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij will play against Urawa Red Diamonds (June 21) and River Plate (June 26).
Taremi is usually a substitute at Inter. He played in 43 matches this season, in which he scored three times and gave nine assists. In the hopelessly lost Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, he spent the entire match on the bench.
