Iran and Israel exchanged rocket fire again on Saturday night, following the Israeli attack the night before. An Israeli woman was killed. A fire broke out at the airport in Tehran.
24 hours after the major Israeli attack on Iran, the two countries continue to fire rockets at each other. In Israel, residents were again called to go to shelters on Saturday night. Plumes of smoke were again seen above Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
According to the Magen David Adom rescue organization, the first fatal victim has fallen in Israel, writes The Times of Israel. It would be a woman in her sixties who was seriously injured in a rocket impact and later died of her injuries. Another fifteen people were injured during the rocket attacks, two of them seriously. Several minor injuries had also been reported earlier.
In Iran, the death toll is much higher. As a result of the Israeli attacks, at least 78 people have died there, including high-ranking military commanders. According to the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Iravani, more than 320 people were injured, the vast majority of whom were civilians.
A fire also broke out at Mehrabad Airport in the Iranian capital, Tehran. A large cloud of smoke hung over the airport after the impact of two “projectiles,” reports the Iranian state news agency Fars. Combat and transport aircraft are also stationed at that airport. Explosions were also heard and smoke was seen elsewhere in Tehran.
Above-ground nuclear power plant completely destroyed
The damage from the major attack the night before has not yet been fully mapped. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in any case, an above-ground nuclear power plant where Iran produced uranium was completely destroyed. The country’s largest underground nuclear facility, in Natanz south of Tehran, was also bombed.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has called for an immediate cessation of violence. “An Israeli bombing of Iranian nuclear sites. Iranian rocket attacks on Tel Aviv. Enough escalation. Time to stop,” he wrote on X.
On the night from Thursday to Friday, Israel carried out attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, weapons factories, senior military personnel and scientists.” It was a major escalation, and Iran considered the attacks a declaration of war.
