A large part of the Netherlands is facing a tropical night. This is a night in which the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees Celsius. In combination with the high humidity, this will result in an exceptionally clammy night, according to Weerplaza.
Especially in the south of the country and the big cities, the chance of a tropical night is high, according to Weerplaza meteorologist Floris Lafeber. In many other places in the country, the temperature will remain between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. But the humid air makes it unpleasantly warm.
“The humidity in the atmosphere is very high. In combination with those high minimum temperatures, this really creates clammy conditions,” says Lafeber. “It will be really sticky and sweaty.”
For De Bilt and the north of the country, it is still uncertain whether the 20-degree limit will be reached. “That’s really a coin flip. But for the south of the country, I dare to say that it will come true. And it will certainly feel that way everywhere.”
Tropical nights do not occur often in the Netherlands. The last time was about a year ago. “Usually it cools down during the night hours. Normally, it is around 10 degrees Celsius at night at this time of year.”
Southwest possibly spared
Showers will pass over the southwest of the country tonight, for which code yellow applies. “As a result, it may start to blow a bit harder, which may cause it to cool down a bit,” Lafeber explains. As a result, it may just barely not be a tropical night in that region.
Saturday will also remain very clammy during the day. Showers will follow later in the day. They will drive away the heat. According to Lafeber, the outlook for next week in particular looks very pleasant. “We expect 23 to 25 degrees Celsius during the day, but with cooler nights. For many people, next week will be pleasant summer weather.”
