Russia has been carrying out one of the largest air strikes on Kyiv since the start of war

Russia has carried out one of the largest air attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv since the start of the war. Other cities were also attacked. There have been several deaths. A day earlier, there was the largest Russian air attack to date.

In the night from Monday to Tuesday, Russia sent 315 drones to Ukraine, of which 277 were shot down. All seven fired rockets were also shot down. Seven of the ten districts in Kyiv were attacked in the attack. One person died and four people had to go to the hospital.

In the port city of Odesa, two men were killed in air attacks on homes and a maternity clinic. The patients and staff of the clinic were able to be evacuated in time. The Dnipro and Chernihiv regions have also been attacked.

Russian drones also damaged the Saint Sophia Cathedral, a monument in the historical center of the capital that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Ukrainian Minister of Culture shared on Facebook that “the enemy has attacked the heart of Ukrainian identity”.

“The Russian attacks are overshadowing the efforts of the United States and other countries worldwide to force Russia to peace,” writes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on X. The Russian Ministry of Defense states that it has attacked military targets in Kyiv, reports state press agency TASS.

Airplanes temporarily grounded in Moscow

The Ukrainian Air Force called the drone attack in the night from Sunday to Monday the largest since the start of the war. In the past week, Russia has fired 1,451 drones and 78 rockets at targets throughout Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ukraine is trying to fight back from the air. The Russian Ministry of Defense reports that 102 drones were shot down in the night from Monday to Tuesday. It was not disclosed how many drones were fired.

The drone attacks were aimed at Moscow and Saint Petersburg, the two largest cities in Russia. As a precaution, aircraft in those two cities had to remain grounded temporarily. Ultimately, nothing was damaged.
