Curaçao must become less dependent on tourism under the new cabinet

On Curaçao, the new government led by Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas has been sworn in. The Pisas III cabinet consists entirely of ministers from the MFK party. This party won the elections in March and holds 13 of the 21 seats.

During the swearing-in, Governor Lucille George-Wout emphasized the importance of the screening law. The monitoring of integrity and absence of conflicts of interest among candidate ministers is strict on Curaçao, the governor said.

According to George-Wout, this was necessary due to bad experiences in the past. Aruba has had a similar law for two years. “The law is not intended to exclude people, but to appoint the right people for this important work,” the governor stated.

The government program was handed over to George-Wout last week by the formateur and is now being calculated. After that, it will be presented to parliament. George-Wout says she hopes that the government program will be implemented “with integrity, expeditiously and in a balanced manner.”

In the 2025-2029 government program, much attention is paid to introducing more economic pillars on Curaçao. The government wants to become less dependent on tourism as the main economic pillar.

In addition, according to the program, three to four more economic pillars must be created that contribute substantially to national production and government revenue.
