In a cave in the French department of Isère, a rescue operation was launched on Sunday afternoon for three speleologists. One of them is trapped. Local authorities expect the operation to take several more hours.

The three researchers are in a cave system in the Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse region. They are located about an hour and a half from the entrance, the local government reports on X. One of the speleologists became trapped under a boulder and was injured. The severity of the injury is unknown.

According to the authorities, the rescue operation started at 2:30 PM and communication with the three is now possible. More than fifty rescuers are now involved in the operation.

An ambulance helicopter is on site to transport the injured speleologist to a hospital. But local authorities warn that the rescue operation is expected to take up a large part of the night.
