A Norwegian general practitioner has been sentenced to the maximum penalty of 21 years for dozens of rapes of patients. The 55-year-old Arne Bye was found guilty of 70 rapes and 82 cases of abuse of power.
Bye carried out his criminal acts as a general practitioner in the town of Frosta, in the middle of Norway. The abuse and rapes took place in the period from 2004 to 2022. The youngest victim was fourteen years old.
The doctor was accused of raping 87 women. He himself confessed to 21 rapes and 44 cases of abuse of power. The judge considered more charges proven and further ruled that Bye may no longer work as a doctor. In addition, he must financially compensate the victims.
94 women testified during the trial. They described how the doctor repeatedly committed touching and vaginal or anal penetration without consent or medical justification. Bye also filmed the rapes, reports the Norwegian medium NRK.
In addition, the general practitioner inserted a metal tube in some cases with his victims. The court ruled that this “is in no case a normal medical act”.
The sentence corresponds to the prosecutor’s demand. Bye’s defense pleaded for a lower sentence.
