The jury in the abuse case against Harvey Weinstein is deliberating. The former film producer was previously convicted of rape and sexual assault, but that verdict was overturned due to an unfair trial. It may take days to weeks for the twelve-member jury to reach a verdict.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 for the rape and sexual assault of two women. At the time, the court had admitted testimonies from alleged victims about criminal offenses for which the former film producer was not on trial. Therefore, the verdict was overturned last year and the entire trial had to be repeated.
The new trial began more than a month ago in New York. Both parties held their closing arguments last week. Weinstein chose not to testify himself.
The now 73-year-old Weinstein is currently already in prison. In an earlier trial, he was sentenced to sixteen years in prison for rape. He will therefore remain in prison, even if the jury acquits him in the current case.
