Boy (17) sentenced to forty hours of work sentence for riots Scheveningen

A seventeen-year-old boy from The Hague was convicted on Tuesday for the riots in Scheveningen a month ago. The juvenile court imposed a community service order of eighty hours, forty of which are conditional, according to the Public Prosecution Service.

The Public Prosecution Service itself had demanded a community service order of one hundred hours, forty of which were conditional.

The boy was sixteen years old during the riots on May 1. According to the Public Prosecution Service, he was part of a group that threw stones, glass, and bicycle parts at the mobile unit. He was recognized on camera footage.

The Child Care and Protection Board advised providing assistance to the boy as well. The juvenile court complied with this. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the sentence was determined “taking into account the age and personal circumstances of the boy, but also the seriousness and impact of the riots”.

Eight other minors who were arrested for the riots are likely to appear before the juvenile court later. The police are still investigating camera footage, hoping to identify and arrest more suspects.
