Yolanthe Cabau largely raises her nine-year-old son Xess Xava alone and is sometimes uncertain about the choices she makes. For example, he still sleeps in bed with her, and she doesn’t know if she’s doing the right thing.
“There are many moments when I am sure that I am doing very well, I see that especially when I look at Xess,” she tells Beau Monde. “He is always so happy and cheerful and has a cheerful, infectious character. And that’s what you do it for.”
Yet there are also moments when Cabau doubts whether she is making the right choices. “To give an example: Xess still sleeps in bed with me very often. I know that many people think something of that, and they will undoubtedly be right.”
She isn’t sure if that’s healthy. “But it’s just my choice and my reality. We travel so much with just the two of us that it’s nice to sleep together. Maybe I’ll find out later that this wasn’t the best choice, but for now, it makes us happy.”
Cabau had her son with former footballer Wesley Sneijder. The actress lives in Los Angeles, while Sneijder is in the Netherlands. She therefore consults little with her ex-husband about the daily things.
‘Sweet conversations between father and son’
“Xess and Wesley have a very good bond, but Wesley is not closely involved in the daily upbringing. If there are important things – such as recently, when Xess had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night because of an ear infection – then of course I will call Wes.”
Xess and his father have contact every morning via FaceTime, says Cabau. “Those are very sweet conversations between father and son, where Wes wishes him a nice day at school. Furthermore, we are always in Europe in the summer holidays and then Wesley comes to us for a few days or Xess sleeps with him. At Christmas we are always with Wes’ family for a day and he also comes to LA regularly. We have divided it well like this.”
A reality series about Cabau will be released on Netflix on June 18.
