A twelve-year-old boy on a scooter died in Brussels on Sunday after being hit by a police car. This happened while the police were chasing the boy.
The collision occurred around 5:50 PM in a park in the Brussels municipality of Ganshoren, police reported to De Morgen on Monday. The boy was resuscitated and taken to the hospital, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The accident occurred during a police chase that had started shortly before, according to the mayor of Ganshoren. The mayor and police did not disclose why officers were chasing the boy.
Eyewitnesses told HLN and BRUZZ that the police car chased the boy through the park at high speed. Subsequently, the car hit the boy from behind.
HLN also reports that the boy was riding an electric scooter. There is a minimum age of sixteen for these scooters. It is unknown whether that is the reason the police were chasing the boy.
The Belgian committee that oversees the police is investigating the collision and the boy’s death.
