The southwest of Turkey was hit by an earthquake on Monday night. The quake had a magnitude of 5.8 and was also felt on Rhodes. A fourteen-year-old girl died, and dozens of people were injured.
The earthquake mainly caused panic in the Turkish province of Mugla. A fourteen-year-old girl had a panic attack and died in the hospital.
Dozens of people were injured as a result of panic. Some of them reportedly jumped out of their homes during the earthquake.
According to Governor Idris Akbiyik, 68 people needed medical attention. At least 46 people were taken to the hospital, Akbiyik writes on X. Others were treated on the spot.
There are no reports of major damage. In the coastal town of Marmaris, cracks are said to have appeared in some buildings. According to the governor, the infrastructure and energy supply in the province have not been affected.
The earthquake was also felt on a number of Greek islands. For example, several NU.nl readers on Rhodes received a notification of the quake on their phones. The alert warned of the possible consequences.
