Coach Anthony Correia is door het dolle heen na de promotie van Telstar naar de Eredivisie. De trainer had zich al wel voorbereid op het sprookje van de club, dat zich zondag ontvouwde bij Willem II.
“Weet je wat grappig is?”, begon Correia zijn interview bij ESPN na de 1-3-zege in Tilburg. “Als je ziet hoe we dit seizoen beleven, denk ik dat we het aardig voor elkaar hebben. Dit is zo genieten. Het is vervelend voor Willem II, maar wij verdienen een Eredivisie-plek.”
Direct daarna stormden uitzinnige spelers van Telstar richting hun coach voor een waterdouche. “Ik zag ze al komen en kon ze niet meer ontwijken”, zei een kletsnatte Correia daarna. “Ik had al een schone onderbroek mee. Ik wist al ergens dat het ging gebeuren.”
Doelman Ronald Koeman junior, de zoon van bondscoach Ronald Koeman, kon het allemaal nog niet geloven. “Dit is niet normaal. We hebben een wereldgroep, ik ben zo trots op die gasten. We kunnen niet normaal goed voetballen. Dat is Eredivisie-waardig, denk ik.”
De keeper wist na de 1-3 van Mees Kaandorp vlak na rust dat Telstar voor het eerst sinds 1978 ging terugkeren in de Eredivisie. “We stonden goed als verdediging, ze kwamen er moeilijk doorheen. Maar de tijd ging heel langzaam.”
Koeman vond het jammer dat Telstar de promotie op het veld niet kon vieren met de meegereisde fans uit Velsen-Zuid. Boze Willem II-supporters stonden de spelers op te wachten rond het uitvak. “Maar dat is Nederland.”
Coach Anthony Correia is overjoyed after Telstar’s promotion to the Eredivisie. The coach had already prepared for the club’s fairytale, which unfolded on Sunday at Willem II.
“You know what’s funny?”, Correia began his interview with ESPN after the 1-3 victory in Tilburg. “When you see how we’re experiencing this season, I think we’ve got it pretty well together. This is so enjoyable. It’s annoying for Willem II, but we deserve an Eredivisie spot.”
Immediately afterwards, ecstatic Telstar players stormed towards their coach for a water shower. “I saw them coming and couldn’t avoid them anymore,” said a soaking wet Correia afterwards. “I already brought a clean pair of underwear. I already knew somewhere that it was going to happen.”
Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman junior, the son of national coach Ronald Koeman, couldn’t believe it all yet. “This is not normal. We have a world-class group, I am so proud of those guys. We can’t play football normally well. That is Eredivisie-worthy, I think.”
After Mees Kaandorp’s 1-3 goal just after half-time, the keeper knew that Telstar would return to the Eredivisie for the first time since 1978. “We were defending well, they had a hard time getting through. But time went very slowly.”
Koeman thought it was a pity that Telstar could not celebrate the promotion on the field with the fans from Velsen-Zuid who had travelled with them. Angry Willem II supporters were waiting for the players around the away section. “But that’s the Netherlands.”
