AC Milan has appointed familiar face Massimiliano Allegri as their new coach on Friday, a day after the dismissal of Sérgio Conceição. The Italian coach thus returns to the Milan club after eleven years.
The 57-year-old Allegri previously coached Milan from 2010 to 2014. He won the league title and the Italian Super Cup with the club. He achieved most of his successes afterwards with Juventus. The trainer became national champion five times in a row with the top club from Turin.
Allegri had been without a club since his departure from Juventus last summer. He succeeds Conceição, who had been Milan’s coach since the end of last year. The Portuguese led his team to the Italian Super Cup, but won no further prizes.
Milan was eliminated by Feyenoord in the intermediate round of the Champions League. Two weeks ago, Conceição’s team lost the Coppa Italia final against Bologna (0-1). The team finished eighth in Serie A, meaning the club will not play European football next season.
It remains to be seen whether Allegri will be working with Tijjani Reijnders at Milan next season. The Dutch international is attracting interest from Manchester City. The English top club reportedly wants to attract the midfielder before the start of the Club World Cup on June 14.
