Erik ten Hag will not be able to call on Jonathan Tah at Bayer Leverkusen next season. The 29-year-old defender, who played for the German club for ten years, joined Bayern Munich on Thursday.
Tah’s contract with Leverkusen expires at the end of June. It was already known that the central defender would most likely not extend his contract with ‘Die Werkself’. Now his departure is final.
The German international has signed a contract with Bayern until the summer of 2029. “I am very happy to sign for Bayern. I want to take my responsibility here, work hard every day and win many prizes together,” the defender says on the site of his new club.
Tah played ten seasons for Leverkusen and became a permanent fixture at the club. With Tah as an important force in the back, the club won the first national title in club history in the 2023/2024 season. The 35-time international was also a starter last season.
Tah is most likely just one of the important players who will leave Leverkusen this summer. For example, the transfer of Orange international Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool is almost complete and Florian Wirtz will soon be making a top transfer to the champion of England.
Ten Hag said on Tuesday at his presentation that he is taking into account that Leverkusen will have to be rebuilt. “If a team is so successful, players are always in the interest. But I am sure that we can build a successful team with new players.”
