Arantxa Rus failed to reach the third round at Roland Garros on Wednesday. The Dutch player made it difficult for the Danish Clara Tauson but couldn’t cause an upset in Paris: 7-6 (2) and 7-5.
The 34-year-old Rus faced the world number 22, 22-year-old Tauson. Rus is 94th in the world rankings.
In the first set, Rus seemed to be heading towards a surprising victory over Tauson, who repeatedly expressed her frustrations on the court. She was annoyed with the ball boy and lashed out at her coach a few times.
Rus remained calm and put Tauson under pressure. There were numerous breaks of serve back and forth on court 13. At a 5-6 score, the Dutch player had the chance to serve out the first set but failed to do so. In the tiebreak that followed, Tauson was the better player.
Rus didn’t recover from that blow in the second set. After an early break from Tauson, the South Hollander fought back to 5-5, but that was it for Rus. Tauson converted her first match point.
