Six Surinamese parties want to form a new government together. Jennifer Simons, chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP), was presented as a future president on Tuesday. The party of current President Chan Santokhi, the progressive reform (VHP), seems to be excluded.

Although the election results is not yet final, NDP spokesperson Ricardo Panka says that his party has won the elections. The NDP is currently on 18 seats, the VHP at 17.

The future coalition includes parties who have stepped out of the Santokhi government: the National Party Suriname and Pertjah Luhur. Vice president Ronnie Brunswijk also joins the new coalition with his party ABOP, although he is still part of the Santokhi government.

The coalition wants to focus on good governance, transparency, fight against corruption, strengthening institutions, independent case law, economic policy and social programs. These plans still have to be worked out in a coalition agreement.

Afterwards, Simons, possibly the first female president of Suriname, looked relaxed. “I worked with the parties all day. We talked about how we can better control the country together, not about the interpretation of posts. I like that.”
