Ajax will not be able to call on Branco van den Boomen at the start of the new season. The midfielder underwent back surgery on Tuesday and is expected to need four months to recover.
Van den Boomen has been struggling with persistent back problems since the end of January. He made his return two months later against Eintracht Frankfurt, but then experienced problems again.
“Unfortunately, in the past period it has not been possible to get rid of my complaints in another way, and therefore this procedure was the most logical choice,” says the 29-year-old Van den Boomen on the Ajax website.
“The consequence is that the next few months will be all about recovery for me. That actually starts immediately, so that I can hopefully return to the group process as soon as possible.”
Due to the back surgery, the chance of a transfer of Van den Boomen is small. The playmaker was reportedly nominated to leave, according to various media. He still has a contract in Amsterdam until the summer of 2027.
Last season, Francesco Farioli rarely called on Van den Boomen. He played twelve Eredivisie matches, five of them as a substitute. He did not contribute to a goal.
