Carlo Ancelotti has announced his first squad as the head coach of Brazil. The Italian, who came from Real Madrid, passes by Feyenoorder Igor Paixão, while he brings back the revived Antony to the national team.
Paixão was still in Brazil’s pre-selection for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches. Ancelotti is also leaving Neymar at home. The recovered attacker recently made his return at Santos, but the head coach thinks it’s too early for an invitation.
Antony can once again hope for playing minutes with Brazil. The attacker played his last international match in March 2023. The former Ajax player experienced a difficult period at Manchester United but is showing his old top form again on loan at Real Betis.
Ancelotti has not included Rodrygo in the selection. The head coach may be leaving his former pupil at Real at home due to fatigue problems. Real teammate and star player Vinícius Júnior is in the squad.
“I have a big job ahead of me,” said the 65-year-old Ancelotti on Monday at his presentation. “I have had many Brazilians under my care in my career. We will work together to make Brazil champions again. I am proud to lead the best team in the world.”
Brazil plays against Ecuador (June 6) and Paraguay (June 11) next month. The team is fourth in the South American qualifying pool with four games left. The numbers one through six go directly to the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
