Households will pay about 20 euros more for gas transport in 2026. This contribution to national natural gas transport is a small part of the total gas bill. A major reason for the price increase is the declining gas use.
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has determined that the transport tariff will increase by 50 percent. The ACM determines each year which tariffs Gasunie must charge network operators. Network operators pass those costs on to users. The 50 percent increase amounts to about 20 euros for users.
Companies and households are using less and less gas: Gasunie expects usage to fall by 12 percent in 2026. Because less gas is being used, the total costs are spread over a smaller amount of transported gas, causing the rate to rise.
Furthermore, Gasunie has invested in a nitrogen factory in Zuidbroek, Groningen. This factory makes gas suitable for pipelines of Dutch households. The previous cabinet requested Gasunie to build this factory to enable the closure of the Groningen gas field.
Rates rose by 52 percent at the beginning of this year, after a decrease of 20 percent in 2024. The tariff fluctuations are largely the result of the loss of Russian gas in 2022.
