Max Verstappen had voorafgaand aan het Grand Prix-weekend nog voorzichtige hoop, maar voegde daar aan toe dat het circuit in het Prinsdom en zijn Red Bull niet goed samengaan. De hoop bleek ijdel, meer dan een vierde startplaats zat er niet in.
Dus bleek Verstappens opsomming van donderdag over waarom Monaco en zijn auto niet bij elkaar passen te kloppen. “Inderdaad. Onze auto vindt deze baan gewoon niet prettig. Dat is eigenlijk al zo sinds 2022”, legde de Limburger na afloop uit.
Hobbels en hoogteverschillen blijven een grote uitdaging voor de auto van de regerend kampioen. “Vooral in die tweede sector. We kunnen daar niet over de kerbstones, we hebben geen mechanische grip. En we zijn gewoon niet goed in langzame bochten.”
Toch was Verstappen vrijdag na twee vrije trainingen nog wel optimistisch. Maar zaterdag bleek hij het tempo vooraan niet te kunnen volgen. McLaren was sneller. Ferrari heeft een auto die juist wél goed bij Monaco past. “En die hebben een stap voorwaarts gemaakt door het weekend heen”, stelde Verstappen vast.
‘No matter what you do with the adjustment’
Normaal is dat juist de kracht van Red Bull; in de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag puzzelen tot de juiste afstelling gevonden is. “Meestal kunnen we dat wel. Maar als je auto niet presteert op lage snelheid dan doe je daar niets aan. Dan maakt het niet uit wat je doet met de afstelling. Hij blijft slecht op lage snelheid.”
“Je probeert dan wel dingen op te lossen, maar dit is gewoon niet onze baan. En dan bedoel ik niet de baan van deze auto”, verduidelijkte hij.
Verstappen won met deze generatie auto’s ook alleen in 2023, het jaar waarin Red Bull echt oppermachtig was. Zelfs toen kwam er een fenomenale kwalificatie ronde aan te pas. In 2021 won hij met de vorige generatie, de Red Bull RB16B waarmee hij uiteindelijk zijn eerste titel pakte. “Dat zegt relatief al veel, dat ik in de jaren dat ik kampioen werd maar twee keer won hier.”
Verstappen did not want to sew Hamilton a punishment
Voor Verstappen met de pers sprak, werd hij eerst nog samen met Lewis Hamilton verwacht bij de stewards. De Ferrari van zijn oude rivaal reed eerder in de kwalificatie in de weg op het stuk omhoog riching het casino. “Duidelijk in de weg, dat verbaasde me wel”, zei Verstappen over de situatie die Hamilton uiteindelijk drie plekken gridstraf opleverde.
Ferrari vertelde Hamilton dat Verstappen achter hem van het gas was gegaan. “Dat was alleen niet zo, maar hij versnelde daarom zelf wel. Dat is ook normaal, hij dacht dus dat ik een langzame ronde zat”, legde de Nederlander de situatie uit.
“Ik weet dat het niet zijn fout is, maar ik heb vorig jaar nog een gridstraf gekregen terwijl we allebei niet eens in een snelle ronde zaten”, wees Verstappen op het veelbesproken moment met George Russell in Qatar.
“Als je hiermee wegkomt, zou ik erg verbaasd zijn. Het is niet dat ik wil dat Lewis een straf krijgt, maar het schept een precedent. Het is natuurlijk de fout van het team, want Lewis is altijd netjes, die gaat altijd aan de kant. Niemand wil sowieso iemand bewust in de wegrijden. Dus, ongelukkig, maar het gebeurt.”
‘Maybe we are lucky’
Op het moment van spreken wist Verstappen dus nog niet of Hamilton een gridstraf zou krijgen. Een vierde of vijfde plaats, het maakte voor hem ook niet veel uit voor zijn perspectief op de race. Dat wordt de eerste Grand Prix van Monaco met twee verplichte pitsstops. Dat biedt strategische kansen, maar Verstappen hoopt er niet te veel van.
“Die twee stops maakt het wel wat interessanter, maar of wij daarvan kunnnen profiteren hangt vooral af van of er een safetycar komt of niet”, blikte hij vooruit. “Misschien hebben we geluk. Het is een lange race. Voor nu is het nog lastig te zeggen wat we moeten doen. Je moet in ieder geval voorbereid zijn op elk denkbaar scenario.”
Red Bull komt zondagochtend met de plannen voor de race. “Vannacht gaan de strategen van ons team alles voorbereiden en dan hebben we daar morgen overleg over. We gaan alle scenario’s doornemen. Maar het belangrijkste is dat we wat punten overhouden aan deze race.”
De Grand Prix van Monaco begint zondag om 15.00 uur.
Max Verstappen had cautious hope before the Grand Prix weekend, but added that the circuit in the Principality and his Red Bull do not go well together. The hope turned out to be in vain, more than a fourth starting place was not in it.
So Verstappen’s list from Thursday about why Monaco and his car don’t match turned out to be correct. “Indeed. Our car just doesn’t like this track. That has actually been the case since 2022,” the Limburger explained afterwards.
Bumps and height differences remain a major challenge for the reigning champion’s car. “Especially in that second sector. We can’t get over the kerbstones there, we have no mechanical grip. And we’re just not good at slow corners.”
Yet Verstappen was still optimistic on Friday after two free practice sessions. But on Saturday it turned out that he could not keep up with the pace at the front. McLaren was faster. Ferrari has a car that suits Monaco well. “And they have taken a step forward throughout the weekend,” Verstappen noted.
‘It Doesn’t Matter What You Do With The Setup’
Normally that is precisely the strength of Red Bull; puzzling in the night from Friday to Saturday until the right setup is found. “Usually we can. But if your car doesn’t perform at low speed, you can’t do anything about it. Then it doesn’t matter what you do with the setup. It remains bad at low speed.”
“You try to solve things, but this is just not our track. And I don’t mean the track of this car,” he clarified.
Verstappen also only won with this generation of cars in 2023, the year in which Red Bull was truly dominant. Even then, a phenomenal qualifying round was required. In 2021 he won with the previous generation, the Red Bull RB16B with which he eventually won his first title. “That says a lot relatively, that I only won here twice in the years that I became champion.”
Verstappen did not because to stitch up Hamilton with a penalty
Before Verstappen spoke to the press, he was first expected with Lewis Hamilton at the stewards. His old rival’s Ferrari was previously in the way in qualifying on the stretch uphill towards the casino. “Clearly in the way, that did surprise me,” Verstappen said about the situation that eventually earned Hamilton a three-place grid penalty.
Ferrari told Hamilton that Verstappen had come off the gas behind him. “That wasn’t the case, but he accelerated himself because of it. That’s normal, so he thought I was on a slow lap,” the Dutchman explained the situation.
“I know it’s not his fault, but I received a grid penalty last year even though we weren’t even in a fast lap,” Verstappen pointed to the much-discussed moment with George Russell in Qatar.
“If you get away with this, I would be very surprised. It’s not that I want Lewis to get a penalty, but it sets a precedent. It is of course the team’s fault, because Lewis is always neat, he always steps aside. Nobody wants to deliberately get in anyone’s way anyway. So, unlucky, but it happens.”
‘Maybe We’re Lucky’
At the time of speaking, Verstappen did not yet know whether Hamilton would receive a grid penalty. A fourth or fifth place didn’t matter much to him for his perspective on the race. That will be the first Monaco Grand Prix with two mandatory pit stops. That offers strategic opportunities, but Verstappen doesn’t hope for too much from it.
“Those two stops make it a bit more interesting, but whether we can benefit from it mainly depends on whether there is a safety car or not,” he looked ahead. “Maybe we’re lucky. It’s a long race. For now it’s still difficult to say what we have to do. In any case, you have to be prepared for every conceivable scenario.”
Red Bull will come up with the plans for the race on Sunday morning. “Tonight the strategists from our team will prepare everything and then we will discuss it tomorrow. We will go through all the scenarios. But the most important thing is that we get some points out of this race.”
